How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Professional MC in Nigeria?

A professional MC in Nigeria costs anywhere from ₦30,000 for someone starting out to ₦3,000,000 and above for popular well-known household names. Most weddings and corporate events sit between ₦100,000 and ₦1,000,000. The range is that wide because the fee covers far more than the hours on stage, and this article shows you what determines that price.

I have been a master of ceremonies for 19 years, and the first question almost every organiser asks me is the price. Almost no MC website answers it. So here is the market as I see it from inside it, what moves the number, how to read a quote, and what I charge myself.

MC rates in Nigeria at a glance

These ranges are drawn from the vendor guides and directories that publish figures, cross-checked against what I see in my own enquiries. Take them as the shape of the market, not a price list.

Two things to notice. First, published figures like these are almost all for weddings, and corporate work sits higher for the same MC. Second, the range inside each level is wide because you are paying for the preparation around the event as much as the hours on stage.

Why one MC costs ten times another

Six things drive the cost. When you understand them, a quote stops looking random to you.

1. The kind of event. A birthday in a hall, a traditional wedding with a full hall of guests, a product launch, an AGM in front of shareholders and regulators, and a government summit with protocol to manage are five different jobs.

The MC’s preparation, the risk if something goes wrong, and the standard of language and dress all rise as you go down that list. So does the fee.

2. The hours. Fees are commonly quoted by half day and full day. My own rate card splits at four hours for a half day and eight for a full day.

A Nigerian wedding that starts at noon and ends after midnight is not a half day, whatever the invitation says. Ask how overrun is charged before the day.

3. Preparation. For a corporate event, the visible work is a fraction of the job. Reading the programme and the speaker bios, calls with the organising team, script development, a rehearsal or walkthrough, learning the names and titles and the order of precedence.

A quote that includes all of that will be higher than one that does not.

4. Travel and accommodation. Nearly every rate card, mine included, excludes them. An MC flying from Lagos to Abuja or Port Harcourt for your event will add flights and a hotel night to the fee. Budget for it separately.

5. The date. December, Easter weekend and the wedding-heavy Saturdays of the year cost more because the good MCs are already booked. Book early and you get a better price and a better MC.

6. Reputation. This is the part organisers find hardest to accept. A recognised name charges more because their presence changes how the event is perceived by guests, sponsors and the press.

For a family party that premium is probably wasted. For a bank’s AGM or a ministry’s summit it can be the whole point.

What the fee is actually buying

When I quote for an event, the hours on stage are the smallest part of what I am pricing.

Before a corporate event I read every document the organisers will share. I learn the names and how to pronounce them, and the order in which dignitaries must be recognised. I ask what the client wants the room to feel like at the end, then I build the flow to get there, including what we do if the keynote runs long or the chairman arrives late. I have hosted for governments, banks and multinationals across Nigeria and abroad, and I have never cancelled a booking in 19 years. That reliability is in the fee too.

What you are buying is that nothing on the day looks improvised, and that when something goes wrong, which it will, the room never finds out. An unprepared MC costs you in stress, and sometimes in how the event is remembered by the people you most wanted to impress.

How to read an MC’s quote

Two quotes with different numbers are often two different services. Before you compare the figures, compare what sits behind them. Ask each MC these questions:

1. What hours does this cover, and what happens if we run over?
2. Is there a pre-event call or briefing? How many?
3. Will you review or write the script and running order?
4. Is a rehearsal or venue walkthrough included?
5. Are travel and accommodation included or extra?
6. What is the deposit, and when is the balance due?
7. What happens if the date changes?

A lower number that excludes preparation, rehearsal and travel is a smaller service, and the work it leaves out still has to happen on the day.

There are also warning signs worth taking seriously:

• No written quote or agreement at all.
• A price that drops sharply the moment you hesitate, which usually means it was never based on anything.
• No reel or reference from an event like yours.
• An MC who has not asked you a single question about the audience before naming a figure.
• Vagueness about overrun, because a Nigerian event that finishes on time is the exception.
